About Cricket – Kirsten’s mother dies

August 9, 2008

Gary Kirsten’s mother, Gayl Hall, has died of cancer in a Cape Town hospital. She was 64.

Kirsten had flown to South Africa on Tuesday, mid-way through India’s tour of Sri Lanka, to be with his mother. Paddy Upton, the mental conditioning coach, took charge of the team for the ongoing third Test in Colombo. Kirsten is yet to reveal whether he will join the team for the five-match ODI series starting August 18.

Kirsten on Leave

August 5, 2008

Gary Kirsten, India’s coach, will not be available for the third Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo after he was granted leave by the BCCI to travel to South Africa to be with his mother, who is critically ill. An interim replacement has not been sought yet.

His departure means that India will be without a coach during their match with Sri Lanka in Colombo on Aug 8.

Last December, Kirsten signed a two-year deal to coach India effective March 2008. While he was with the team as a consultant for the last two Tests in Australia, his first assignment as coach was the three-Test series against South Africa, which was drawn 1-1.
